Your First Equine Workshop: Exactly What to Expect at BellaSoul Farm

So you've signed up for a workshop at BellaSoul Farm — or you're hovering over the button, wondering if it's for you. Maybe you've never touched a horse. Maybe you're not sure what "Equine Assisted Learning" even involves. This post is for you: a friendly, no-surprises walk-through of exactly what to expect.
First, the reassurances. There is no riding — every activity happens on the ground, standing beside the horses. You need zero horse experience; most of our guests have never handled a horse before. There's no fitness requirement — if you can take a gentle walk, you can do this. And nobody is ever forced past their comfort zone: if you'd rather observe for a while, the fence line has excellent seating.
When you arrive, you'll wind up our drive in Tellico Plains and be welcomed by Lynn — and, in short order, by the welcoming committee of horses and donkeys who consider every gathering partly theirs. Workshops begin with introductions, a little grounding, and a safety walk-through: how to approach a horse, how to read their signals, how to be a good guest in their world.
Then comes the heart of it: structured activities with the herd, guided by a certified Equine Assisted Learning facilitator. Depending on the workshop, you might lead a horse through a course you and a partner design, work as a group to solve a problem with a very opinionated four-legged teammate, or simply practice being present with an animal who notices everything. The activities are simple on the surface — and surprisingly deep underneath. Horses respond to what's real, so every exercise becomes a gentle mirror: how you communicate, how you lead, what you do when plans fall apart.
Between activities, the group reflects together. This is where the magic tends to land — the moment someone connects what just happened in the arena to something in their life, their family, or their work. There are usually some laughs, often a few tears of the good kind, and always more insight than anyone expected from an afternoon on a farm.
Practical things: wear closed-toe shoes (boots or sneakers are perfect) and clothes you don't mind getting a little farm on. Bring water, sunscreen, and a hat in summer. Our seasonal events — herbal walks, women's workshops, wellness gatherings — are listed on our Events page with dates and tickets, and registration is handled securely right on our site.
Workshops run small on purpose. Intimacy is the point: enough room for every person to have their own moment with a horse, and for the group to feel like a circle rather than an audience. That's also why events sell out — if you see a date that calls to you, don't sit on it.
Whether you come for personal growth, stress relief, time with your daughter or your team, or simple curiosity about these remarkable animals, you'll leave with the same things everyone does: a quieter mind, a fuller heart, and at least one horse you now consider a friend. Check the Events page for what's coming up — we'd love to gather with you.
