JR’s Second Chance: From Rescue Horse to Future Teacher

JR, a 32-year-old rescue horse, enjoying attention at his forever home at BellaSoul Farm.

When JR arrived at BellaSoul Farm, I knew we had a long road ahead of us.

At 32 years old, he came to me needing more than just a safe place to land. He needed weight, proper nutrition, attention to his health, farrier care, and time. Most importantly, he needed the opportunity to simply settle in and know that he was safe.

Today, I’m so happy to share that JR has gained approximately 100 pounds! He still has more weight to gain, but the difference in him already is incredible.

And it isn't just his body that's changing.

His Personality Is Starting to Shine. As JR has gotten stronger and more comfortable, I’ve had the privilege of watching his wonderful personality emerge. Earning his trust has been so beautiful.

He genuinely enjoys people. He loves being groomed, getting attention, and sometimes just standing quietly with you. There is so sweet about a horse who doesn't need you to do anything, he simply enjoys your company.

His rain rot has cleared up, and his coat is finally beginning to develop the healthy shine it should have. He's also had two visits with the farrier, and he was an absolute gentleman for both.

Every one of these seemingly small milestones tells me the same thing: JR is healing he feels safe and he is trusting.

More Than a Rescue When I brought JR home, my immediate concern was giving him the care he needed. I wasn't thinking very far beyond that.

But the more I get to know him, the more I believe there may be another chapter waiting for this old guy.

Once JR is fully healed, at a healthy weight, and physically ready, I hope to begin slowly working with him to see if he enjoys participating in the Equine Assisted Learning programs at Root & Rein.

Something tells me he's going to be an incredible teacher.

EAL isn't about riding horses. It's about learning alongside them. Horses have an extraordinary ability to teach us about trust, boundaries, communication, healthy relationships, patience, confidence, resilience, and simply being present.

And JR already has quite a story to tell.

It is so meaningful to me, the possibility that a horse who needed a second chance could someday stand beside a person who needs one, too. Maybe someone will look at JR and see more than an old horse who once needed rescuing. Maybe they'll see that healing takes time. That where you started doesn't determine where you finish. That needing help doesn't make you less valuable. And that there can still be purpose waiting for you in the next chapter of your life. JR the teacher of resilience!

His Forever Home

For now, JR doesn't have to worry about any of that. His only job is to eat, heal, gain weight, enjoy being loved, and continue showing who he is. He's home.

I am incredibly grateful to everyone who has followed JR's journey, donated feed or supplies, helped with his care, shared his story, or simply cheered him on from afar. Caring for a senior horse with special needs is a significant commitment, and your support helps me continue giving JR everything he needs.

We've still got some pounds to put on this handsome old man, but when I look at him today, I don't just see how far he has left to go. I see how incredibly far he's already come. And I have a feeling JR's story is only beginning. ❤️

THANK YOU for following along, your support means the world to me, this little farm and the beautiful souls that call BellaSoul Farm HOME!

Warmly,
Lynn
