This Week on the Farm: New Beginnings & Second Chances

There are weeks on the farm that remind me exactly why I chose this life.

This was one of those weeks.

Within just a few days, we welcomed new life into the world and opened our gates to two horses who desperately needed a second chance.

## Welcome, Asher

Our sweet donkey, Matilda, gave birth to a beautiful little colt we've named **Asher**, or **Ash** for short.

The name Asher means *happy, blessed, and fortunate*—and it couldn't fit him better.

Watching him take his very first wobbly steps, discover those long legs, and begin exploring the world has been such a gift. Every day brings something new. A little more confidence. A little more curiosity. A little more personality.

One of my favorite moments has been watching Grace quietly standing nearby, softly nickering as she watched the newest little member of the farm. Horses and donkeys notice everything. They observe before they react, and it's beautiful to witness how naturally they welcome positive change.

Ash is already reminding us that life is meant to be explored with curiosity one small step at a time.

## A Different Kind of Arrival

Just as we were celebrating new life, another chapter unfolded.

Big Red and JR arrived at BellaSoul Farm.

To say they needed help would be an understatement.

When I first met them, I knew their story wasn't over.

Big Red simply needs groceries, time, and good care. He's already had his teeth floated, his sheath cleaned, and after a good grooming, he's beginning to look like a different horse.

JR, however, broke my heart.

He's severely underweight and was diagnosed with Cushing's disease, which requires lifelong medication and careful management. Even so, there is something incredibly inspiring about him. Despite everything his body has endured, his spirit is still there. He's feisty. Curious. Not ready to quit.

Since arriving, I've spent time gently grooming him, removing months of neglect from his coat, mane and tail, treating his skin, adjusting his nutrition, and giving him the care every horse deserves.

Healing won't happen overnight, but every day he looks just a little brighter.

## The Beauty of Holding Both

This week has been a reminder that life rarely gives us just one emotion at a time.

Joy and heartbreak often walk hand in hand.

One minute you're watching a newborn discover the world.

The next you're helping another animal learn that the world can still be kind.

Both matter.

Both are sacred.

The outpouring of support for JR and Big Red has been incredibly humbling. Your donations have helped cover some of the cost of veterinary care, medication, feed.

As many of you know, Root & Rein was never intended to become a rescue organization. Our mission is helping people heal through equine-assisted learning.

But sometimes life places something in front of you that you simply cannot walk away from.

When these horses needed someone, saying no wasn't an option.

The welfare of the horses will always come first here because healthy, cared-for horses are the heart of the work we do with people.

I truly believe JR and Big Red have a purpose beyond simply being rescued. My prayer is that, once they're healthy, they'll become part of helping others find hope, healing, confidence, and connection, just like Ghost and Grace do.

This little corner of Tennessee continues to remind me every day that healing comes in many forms.
